Pre-season Highlights against Sydney FC and Melbourne Heart

Here are some highlights on Everton's pre-season tour of Australia. Everton has won both matches that they have played so far. The Blues next play the Brisbane Roar in Brisbane on Saturday.

Everton beat Sydney FC 1-0. Victor Anichebe scored the lone goal
Highlights:

Everton beat the Melbourne Heart 2-0, with goals from Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha. Saha also missed an early penalty shot from Seamus Coleman. I didn't get to see the match, but from the looks of it, looks like Coleman had a great match. Everton seemed to dominate the pace of the game much more compared to their last match against Sydney.
Here are the Highlights:

Everton defeat Sydney FC in pre-season clash.

Victor Anichebe scored in the 46th minute to defeat Sydney FC. I didn't get to catch the game, but it seems that while Sydney played quite well, there were more chances for the Toffees. Players like Arteta, Osman, and Anichebe all looked to continue their great form coming back from injury last season.

The Toffees were wearing their pink away kits that, I have to admit, are not as bad in action as I though they would be. They are still quite a downgrade from last season's away kit.

More news on Everton's pre-season Australia trip to come as news breaks.

What the World Cup Means for Everton

I am going to be guest blogging at Royal Blue Mersey every so often so some of my posts will have links to their site.

What the World Cup Means for Everton:

João Pedro Pereira Silva officially signs with Everton

Though I reported earlier that Everton have gotten Portuguese striker Joao Silva, he had not officially signed with the team. Well, today he officially signed a 3-year contract with Everton. The transfer fee is undisclosed, though I believe it to be around 500,000 Pounds. Joao Silva is a 6 ft. 2 in. striker from the Portuguese second division side Desportivo Aves. He scored 14 goals in 32 appearances.

Senderos Signs With Fulham

Fulham have signed Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos on a 3-year contract. Senderos has been on Arsenal since 2003 but didn't really find much first team action recently. He has been on loan to A.C. Milan and most recently Everton. He made only three appearances for The Toffees. His injury problems and lack of form contributed to his lack of appearances for the club.

Everton News Roundup

Since I've been lazy and haven't posted in a while, I've missed a couple of stories over the last week. Nothing life changing, but nonetheless important.

1) Jermaine Beckford has officially signed a 4-year contract with the club. We knew it was going to happen, we were just waiting for the "official" news.

2) Manchester City is interested in John Heitinga. The reported bid will reportedly be around 9 million pounds even though he is on a 4-year contract with Everton. Heitinga's response to City's interest is a little disconcerting.

"Manchester City have ambition, and I am open to the idea of joining a big club. I hear things said here, there, and everywhere about a move for me, although there is nothing definite yet."

"But I still have a four year contract, without a fixed-buyout clause, so I'm trying to establish myself at Everton. "

It seems that he is always open to joining a bigger club, but he will honor his contract and will only go if the two parties reach an agreement (unlike Lescott and many others). Source: Goal.com

3) Striker Victor Anichebe did not make Nigeria's World Cup roster after they trimmed players to their final 23-man squad. The reasoning behind Nigeria dropping Anichebe seems due to "serious injury", even though Everton is disputing this as misinformation. Everton claim that Anichebe only suffered a minor shin bruise.

I don't know what to believe, this whole situation seems a little bizzare. It makes it even weirder because Anichebe had been performing very well in the tune-ups right before the final squad was named.

Will Everton Sell Yakubu for £7 Million?

Looks like West Ham is getting ready to bid for Yakubu. According to Goal.com, "It is understood that a deal has already been agreed in principle with Yakubu's representatives". West Ham seems to be looking for a replacement to Carlton Cole, who is being sought by a plethora of clubs.

Yakubu has been quite a disappointment this season, though we could probably attribute his lack of form to his long-term injury. Everton needs a consistent striker, but also needs the cash. I think this would be a decent move if Everton will be able to secure a striker like Bellamy. If not, I would rather keep him. We know how Yakubu can play when he is in-form. It would be better to hope he can reattain that form, than sell him and hope others can pick up the slack. Striker is still the position where we need new blood and maybe selling Yakubu can bring on that change.

Rodwell Signing Official

Well, its official. Jack Rodwell has signed a five-year contract to stay at Everton. This is big relief, and the club can now turn it's attention to signing Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar!

Jack Rodwell Snubs Manchester United

I almost cried when I heard the news, but I didn't. Why? Because it isn't official yet. Oh how I hope this comes into fruition.

Mail Online and Goal.com are reporting that Jack Rodwell has turned down an offer by Man U. He is instead set to sign a five-year contract with Everton worth around 30,000 pounds per week.

If this story is true, it will be a huge sigh of relief for the club and the fans. We will now be able to turn our attention to keeping Arteta and Pienaar.

Life-Threatening Injury for Shane Duffy

Shane Duffy, the 18 year old Everton defender, lacerated his liver during a training match with the Ireland national team. The injury occurred after Duffy collided with a goalkeeper on Friday.

USA Today reports:

Team surgeon John O'Byrne and team doctor Alan Byrne treated Duffy on the field before he had surgery at a nearby hospital.

O'Byrne says "it was a freak injury that in another 100 years of medicine we may never see again."

O'Byrne said Saturday that Duffy's life was no longer in danger.

Duffy is not in Everton's first team but had been scheduled to train with the Ireland squad ahead of next week's friendlies against Paraguay and Algeria."

More information as the news develops.

Seamus Coleman Locked up for 4 Years

Everton has just signed defender Seamus Coleman for a 4 year contract following some impressive showings by the youngster. He was first signed by the Toffees in 2008 from Sligo Rovers (Ireland) for a fee of 60,000 pounds.

Everton's Offer for Jan Vertonghen Rejected

I'm seeing conflicting stories on this story. Daily Mail is reporting that an 8.5 million pound (10 million Euros) offer was rejected. It also says that Ajax was looking for upwards of 10 million pounds (11.6 milion Euros) for the defender. Goal.com is reporting that Everton offered 11 million Euros but was rejected by Ajax, who is looking for at least 15 million.

I don't know which one is more accurate, but I do know that increasing our offer would be too much for the 23 year old Vertonghen. He is a very good player, but spending that much would be a waste unless we lose Jagielka.

It's Official: Cahill Signs Extension

This really isn't really news because we knew it was going to happen, but I have to post this because it is official now. Tim Cahill has signed a long-term contract that will keep him with Everton until 2014.

Lescott Deja Vu

Everton has sent a strong message to both Arsenal and Manchester United that Phil Jagielka is not for sale. This seems eerily familiar to how the Joleon Lescott affair started out. Not to say this will play out exactly the same, because Lescott wanted to leave and was vocal about it. Just saying that this was how it started last year too.

Here's some other transfer rumors and news:

-Since there are a number of clubs keen on securing West Ham's Carlton Cole, West Ham is looking at Yakubu as a possible replacement. There is definitely a possibility that Moyes is willing to sell Yakubu as long as a decent price is offered. Yakubu has struggled to find form since returning from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Sources: ESPN and Goal.com.

- I don't know how good this source is so you are going to have to bear with me, but tribalfootball.com says that we may be in the race (with Aston Villa) to sign Tottenham winger David Bentley. A fee 10 million pounds seems like a bargain.

- This news is a little late but Dan Gosling is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery. He was projected to be out for 9 months, but is expected to recover sooner than that according to BBC Sport.

- Marseille's Hatem Ben Arfa is on David Moyes' radar yet again. He has had a great season with the Ligue 1 winners and has voiced his interest for playing in England. "To have a chance to play in England would be wonderful but the sporting project is more interesting to me than any sums of money." Source: Goal.com
Seems like David Moyes is getting ready to replace Steven Pienaar in case he leaves. David Bentley and Hatem Ben Arfa are both wingers like Pienaar and would be good, cheap replacements.

Rumor Mill Update

These are some updates to previous rumors heard:

- Daily Post has a great article that talks about Moyes' interest in Jermaine Beckford. It pretty much says that Moyes is still considering Beckford and that he is one of a couple of strikers that he is "mulling over". The Toffees are also facing competition from Parma as well as a bunch of other clubs.

- One of the other strikers that Moyes seems to be considering is Bobby Zamora of Fulham. The sun reports that Aston Villa and Birmingham City are also vying for Zamora's services. I don't think Zamora will be a good signing. The 8 million pound price tag seems high for someone who historically has had trouble finding the back of the net. I would rather have Bellamy or even take a shot with Beckford.

- Goal.com is reporting that Chelsea and Manchester United are "ready to go toe-to-toe" for Jack Rodwell. The article then precedes to explain that even though Everton would like to keep him, we may lose him just like we failed to keep Wayne Rooney. One thing they forget is that Everton had to sell Rooney in order to stay afloat as the club was going through some financial difficulties in 2004.

Everton Season Review

The only way to describe this season is one big free fall followed by one incredible run. Either consistently bad or consistently good.

I can't call this year a success or a failure. Before the beginning of the season, everyone had expectations to best last year's 5th place finish. But after a horrific start, multiple injuries, and that whole Jolean Lescott fiasco, an 8th place finish does not sound nearly that bad.

So how did we get of to such a terrible start? Injuries and Joleon Lescott. Lescott leaving to Manchester City and the injuries to Jagielka and Neville threw the back four into disarray. Distin and later Heitinga came in, but lack of chemistry and depth destroyed the first four months.

Did it work out in the end? Yes.

Distin ended up being great. Heitinga has been phenomenal. And we now have plenty of depth. The lesson with the Lescott affair is that there is a price for everyone. No matter how good Lescott was for us, selling him ended up being great for us. Lescott ended up having a mediocre campaign at Man. City while the Toffees ended up getting a plethora of players with talent.

2010 was when everything turned around for the club. The defense shook away its chemistry problems. Our midfield controlled the ball, and our team in general fought hard for the club.

As weird as it sounds, I think we are in a better position this off season than last off season. We have greater depth, confidence, and talent. I'll post on what and who we need to move forward, later this weekend.

Best Player: Steven Pienaar
I was tempted to say Cahill, but Pienaar was just a game changer. Saha would have been here if he hadn't tailed off towards the end of the year. Fellaini should also be mentioned because he was outstanding and would probably be in the discussion if not for his injury.

Best Signing: John Heitinga
This one was close too, between Heitinga and Distin. Heitinga ultimately shines because he minimized mistakes while Distin was seemed vulnerable a few times. Almost all of Moyes' signings were hits. I say almost because...

Worst Signing: Jo
Not even close. Huge disappointment. He didn't score a single goal, had character issues, and was just painful to watch on the pitch. The only bad signing by Moyes.

Best Young Player: Jack Rodwell
Should I even explain. Looked like he was born to be on the pitch. He changed games, scored goals, passed well and didn't show any glaring weaknesses. The scary thing is that he doesn't look like he is close to his potential. God I hope we don't lose him.

High Point of the Season: Beating Manchester United and Chelsea
I should really say all of 2010, but these two games meant a lot. They showed that we can beat the two best teams in the Prem League and built our confidence.

Low Point of the Season: First game against Arsenal
I want to say the whole first half of the season, but this match was just plain painful. All my hope for the season was pretty much shattered with this game. It's not good to start of the season losing 6-0 for our worst home loss in the Premier League.

Rumor Central

There are about 8 billion rumors surrounding a lot of our players. I am going to try and go through as many as possible. Just remember most of these are RUMORS, not reality.

- Many sources say that we are the likely destination of Jermaine Beckford from Leeds United via free transfer. Not official yet, but I love this move. If it happens, that is.

- Landon Donovan said he would love to come back to Everton. This obviously will not happen until the LA Galaxy have had their say. But it looks like we have the leg up on other clubs if they choose to transfer him.

- According to Goal.com and Mirror Football, contract talks to extend Mikel Arteta have stalled. Manchester United and Arsenal are both highly interested. This worries me a lot. I love Arteta and I think he is one of the most important players on our team. We need to keep him.

- We are being linked with Craig Bellamy of Manchester City, according to Goal.com and Dailymail.co.uk. This is a surprise. Supposedly, he is to cost 7 million pounds for the transfer and high weekly wages, so the only way we could sign him would be with a sale of players. I'm going to be honest, I have always hated Bellamy, but I can't deny that he's a pretty good striker. He would provide a spark whether its from the bench or starting, something Yakubu and Saha have failed to do consistently.

I'm going to go in depth in a future post, but I thought the only missing piece for Everton during the second half of the season was striker. Saha performed phenomenally, but was really streaky and disappeared near the end. Looks like we are really addressing that issue. I can't refrain from saying that I am scared, though. We were perfect at midfield and three major pieces can be taken away from us. As long as we keep at least two (preferably Arteta and Rodwell), I think we will be fine. As much as I love Pienaar, I think he is dispensable, especially if we get a good striker or two.

Pienaar to Decide Future After World Cup

Remember when I said Everton and Steven Pienaar are working out a deal before the World Cup starts so they can be at peace. Well that's not going to happen according to BBC Sports. Pienaar explained that he prefers to stay, "I've made it clear before that I want to stay at Everton".

" We will just have to wait and I made it clear to the manager also that we will talk after the World Cup."

This makes me nervous. If we want a shot at contending for the top four, we need Pienaar.

This also made me nervous:
"When asked if he believes he will be at Everton next season, Pienaar said: 'If God wants me to come back after the World Cup healthy and happy then I'll be there'."

Extensions, Rumors, and More!

- The Toffees are trying to wrap up Tim Cahill to a four-year extension before the World Cup. That's smart by Everton. If Cahill impresses even more at the World Cup, the Toffees would have more trouble in wrapping him up.

- Everton is linked with Peniel Mlapa, a 19-year old Togo born German striker from 1860 Munich. This is another great move by Moyes and the club to find cheap and young talent to fill the roster. I think this is a great move, but it will help us more in the future. We need to get a top notch striker that can come in and score goals immediately!

- A story from the Liverpool Daily Post caught my eye. A local "business consortium" from Liverpool unveiled a possible plan to get Liverpool and Everton new stadiums. It is called a "Siamese stadium" and is pretty much two stadiums combines by one common wall. While I think this is an innovative way to save money (180 - 220 million pounds according to the business group), I think the stadium would ruin the experience of supporters of both teams. I would actually rather have one stadium for both teams, even though that seems impossible in the Prem League. Just see the picture, you'll understand.

- I still can't get over that Bily goal in injury time yesterday. Just phenomenal.

Injury time winner concludes the season

I didn't get a chance to watch this game today so this is going to be a little short. Here are match recaps from ESPN, Telegraph, and The Sun.

Everton supposedly dominated most of the match and had a plethora of shots and headers agonizingly close. Anthony Vanden Borre scored just before the hour for Portsmouth, but was inexplicably ruled offside by the linesman.
In the 4th minute of injury time, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov scored on an outstanding shot outside of the box that turned out to be the last kick of the game.

Here are the video highlights.

Everton 1 - 0 Portsmouth

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov scored an injury time goal to win it for the Toffees.
Full match recap coming later.

Everton - Portsmouth Preview

I took a couple of days off from posting since there wasn't really any noteworthy news. As I said in an earlier post, this game against Portsmouth doesn't really matter. We are going to be in 8th place no matter what.

Heitinga wants to play, but he is still recovering from a hairline fracture on his ankle. I would rather we not play him, instead of risking further injury.

Everton
Likely Starters: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Anichebe, Arteta, Cahill, Pienaar, Saha
Subs: Rodwell, Yobo, Yakubu, Bilyaletdinov, Nash, Senderos, Osman, Baxter

Portsmouth
Likely Starters: James, Rocha, Mokoena, Vanden Borre, Sowah, Utaka, Brown, Wilson, Boateng, Dindane, Piquionne
Subs: Mullins, Finnan, Ashdown, Basinas, Kanu, Ritchie, Smith, Pack, Ward

Steven Pienaar wins Player of the Year (and other news)

- Steven Pienaar won Everton player of the year. Leighton Baines was voted as the "players' player of the year" (I know it sounds weird, but I took it right out of BBC Sport). Jack Rodwell was named young player of the year.

- Marouane Fellaini seems to be ahead of schedule in his injury rehab. According to Everton's website, Fellaini is targeting to be back July or August, just in time for the pre-season campaign.

- This rumor came out a couple of days ago on goal.com. Supposedly Moyes wants to get Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha (reportedly for £3.75 million). I think this is a good move, he is a very good young defender but he does have a lot of injury problems. One thing Everton is lacking is depth. The club's players have a propensity to getting injured, and this would be nice insurance.

-Everton's women squad beat Arsenal to win the Women's FA Cup for the first time. Nice to see the club achieving something, even if it is the women's team.

Almost the end...

Of the season that is. I’m talking about the end because next week’s match doesn’t really matter. We are already out of contention for a spot in the Europa League, and we can’t move up or down from 8th place in the Premier League. So you can’t really blame me for looking ahead. But I’ll write a season recap post and a post looking forward to the future next week after the season is officially over.

The last couple of weeks of the Prem League have been a little less exciting than other leagues. This is only because the three teams relegated from the Prem are already written in stone (Hull City, Burnley, and Portsmouth). Newcastle and West Brom are going to be back in the Prem with a playoff deciding the third spot (it’s between Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City, Leicester City, and Blackpool). The top of the league is a little more exciting. Chelsea is in first while Man U. is one point behind for the league title. Tottenham is in 4th place with a spot for Champions League qualifying, but Manchester City is only a point behind with two games to play for both of them (they play each other on Wednesday).

Now back to Everton news:

- Phil Neville is enthusiastic for next season, even if we don’t bring anyone else into the club.

“Eighth position feels like a bit of a failure. I honestly can’t believe we’re there, but you get what you deserve in the league, and the poor first half of the season has cost us dearly.”

“If we were a club on the slide that wasn’t signing players or producing young players maybe you would worry, but at the moment the way we’re playing football and how we’ve improved shows we’re moving forward.”

“It doesn’t bother me if we don’t bring anyone in because we’ve got a strong squad."

That’s a lot of confidence in our current team. I like this a lot, but injuries have always been the most important factor in Everton’s failure and we need to make sure we have capable backups like the elite teams.

- Looks like we are favorites to sign Jermaine Beckford (free transfer) according to this article.

- This news was out a couple of days ago but I forgot to post it. Everton is going to tour Australia in July facing a few A-League sides. Details are on this site.

Everton's slim European chances dashed

Everton and Stoke City ended with a draw in a sloppy game. Both teams had one major chance each. Stoke City's chance was an open shot by Rory Delap (48th minute) which was shockingly not even on target. Everton had a goal by Jagielka waived because Victor Anichebe was offside. The draw officially ends any hopes of European qualification for the Toffees.

All Tied at 0 at the half

Everton 0 - 0 Stoke City at the half.

João Pedro Pereira Silva to Everton

Joao Pedro Pereira Silva or Joao Silva for short, seems to have made a move to Everton. Silva is a Portuguese footballer from Portuguese Second Division team Desportivo Aves. The promising striker made his professional debut earlier this season, and immediately became one of the top scorers in the Second Division. The transfer fee is reported to be £500,000, not bad for a really promising forward. I can't say for sure, because I can't find any footage of Silva, but he seems to be a very good signing for the club.

Everton Updates

Alright, so I've all but given hope on Everton making it to Europe. We need Liverpool to lose their next two matches while we win ours. Seems highly unlikely, especially because Liverpool plays a woeful Hull City on May 9th.

So I'm going to stop talking about it and instead start talking about how our club can finish strong and look forward to contending for the title next season! It's been quite a while since we've had a team that was strong enough to have these types of expectations, but as long as our team stays somewhat intact, I think this is possible. I will talk about what went right, what went wrong, as well as changes we need to make to the club after the season ends (World Cup coverage too).

For now, these are a couple of things that have happened that i missed the last couple of days.

- Looks like The Toffees have put a £20 million dollar price tag on Steven Pienaar. Contract negotiations have also stalled. I like the price tag, so we don't lose him, but my biggest fear of all is that he doesn't sign, he plays for us next season and then leaves on a free transfer. Hopefully the club sorts this out, but I would rather him sign or leave (so we get the transfer money), no in between.

- David Moyes has been linked to Manchester United, which makes me nervous. Even though he said there is no way the news is true, it would be a HUGE blow to Everton. He has made some spectacular signings as well as getting Everton to play and contend for the top half of the Prem League.

- The Toffees have become favorites to sign Paul Scharner from Wigan. I don't know if I would like this signing. He is a good player from a mediocre team, but he plays a position where we have a lot of talent.

- Both Mikel Arteta and Victor Anichebe are trying to get last minute call-ups to their respective World-Cup squads. Mikel Arteta has been paying excellent football but is trying to make an already stacked midfield on the Spanish National Team. Victor Anichebe on the other hand is most likely trying for a backup role on the Nigerian National Team, where there have been some injuries (Yakubu will most likely make the roster). Other current players on Everton that will most likely be included on their national squads are: Tim Cahill (Australia), Phillippe Senderos (Switzerland), Tim Howard (USA), Yakubu (Nigeria), Luois Saha (France), Steven Pienaar (South Africa), John Heitinga (Holland), and Joseph Yobo (Nigeria).

Everton 2 - 1 Fulham Highlights

Here are the highlights to the Everton - Fulham game:

Even though we pulled out a victory, Liverpool crushing Burnley pretty much dashes any remaining hope for European football. We now have to hope for Liverpool losing their last two matches while Everton wins their last two matches. Highly unlikely, but still possible.

Injury time penalty wins it for Everton!

Everton 2 - 1 Fulham

After Chris Smalling deflected a Victor Anichebe header into his own net in the 50th minute, Everton brought an all out attack. Nothing seemed to work out as the Toffees seemed be out of contention for Europe with a draw. But an injury time penalty on Tim Cahill by Chris Baird seemed to bring black the fading dream of Europe for Everton. Mikel Arteta converted the penalty and Everton is still in contention for 7th place and the last spot for the Europa League.

Everton 0 - 1 Fulham

Fulham score after a terrible mistake by Leighton Baines. Baines tried to back pass without looking to Howard and was caught by Erik Nevland, who put it in the back of the net. Other than that, there were no major chances on goal for either side. Everton seemed to control possession by a slight margin. Arteta was also injured but looks like he will return after the half

Everton - Fulham Preview

This is it. The home stretch. Only three more matches left in the season (Home against Fulham, at Stoke City, and home against Portsmouth). Portsmouth has officially been denied a chance to go to the Europa League (making it to the FA Cup finals), so the 7th place team in the Premier League will be allowed to go instead. Everton is currently in 8th place. The Toffees have not lost a home league game since November, but merely avoiding a loss will not be enough. A win is compulsory for the Toffees if 7th place is in their minds.

Fulham are playing for pride only at this point. They are not in contention for a European spot and are not close to the relegation battle. Fulham played midweek in the Europa League against Hamburg to a scoreless draw. Fulham's top scorer, Bobby Zamora, is also injured after aggravating his Achilles injury. This game is also Tim Cahill's 200th start for Everton. All these factors seem to make this game perfect for an Everton victory, but the Toffees can not become overconfident. Mark Schwarzer has been phenomenal at goal recently and could make goals difficult to come by for the Toffees. Everton also have a history of not winning the games they are supposed to.

In the end, I think Everton win this game 3-1. Fulham have had trouble to score, and losing Zamoro will not help. Everton has had a pretty good goal scoring run, and that should be the difference. I don't see Everton losing or drawing this important of a game at home.

Everton's Squad:
John Heitinga's hairline fracture on his ankle will definitely keep him against Fulham and most likely for the rest of the season.

Likely Starters: Howard, Jagielka, Hibbert, Distin, Baines, Bilyaletdinov, Neville, Cahill, Arteta, Pienaar, Saha
Bench players that could see minutes: Rodwell, Yakubu, Yobo, Senderos

Fulham's Squad: Schwarzer, Pantsil, Smalling, Hughes, Shorey, Duff, Murphy, Etuhu, Dempsey, Gera, Okaka

Fellaini accused of attacking woman

Bad news for Marouane Fellaini and Everton. Fellaini is accused of attacking a woman in a London nightclub. He has not been arrested, but Scotland Yard is supposedly looking into the matter.

We're going to have to wait this one out for now to find the details and repercussions (if any). But if this is true, what are you doing Fellaini? Not only did you attack a woman, your doing it with a bad ankle. For those of you familiar with American Football, this is the same path Ben Roethlisberger took, and it isn't looking pretty for him now (suspensions, media ridicule, intense scrutiny on personal life). Hopefully, Fellaini gets his head back on and starts making better decisions.

Steven Pienaar seems to want his future resolved sooner rather than later, according to this article by skysports.com. Pienaar wants to know where he will be next year before the World Cup begins. This is a great thing for Everton because most likely we will either sign an extension with him or sell him, instead of letting him go for free after next season.

Pienaar plays the attacking midfielder role perfectly for Everton, but I am not so sure he would fit in with every club. At this time, we know that Tottenham along with Man U. and Liverpool are interested in him(maybe some other foreign clubs too).
The two big question marks next season are Jack Rodwell and Pienaar, and although I would like both of them to stay, I would rather keep Rodwell. David Moyes seems hell-bent on keeping everyone so we may be able to sign Pienaar, but I am not too worried, as long as we get a good price for him.

Hopefully, this problem sees a solution soon so we don't have another last minute scramble to find a replacement player (like the Joleon Lescott incident).

Arteta Sorry for Eye Poking Incident, Kind Of

Interesting article by Guardian.co.uk. Supposedly, Mikel Arteta knew Morten Gamst Pedersen might make some hasty tackles. That combined with the fact that Arteta has had quite a bit of injury problems recently (groin tear recently and knee ligament damage for most of last season) resulted in his angry eye poking reaction.

“I probably shouldn't have reacted like I did but there have been a few times – not just in this match – when he's made bad tackles," said the Spaniard. "I don't mind it when they're fair or tough, I accept it with no problem. But with him it's different and he knows that – I told him after it as well.”

Arteta did apologize, even though he made it seem that Pedersen had it coming.

"But I made a mistake, I shouldn't have reacted and I apologise for it. I probably got more upset because I was out for so long and don't want a stupid challenge like that injuring me again."

I don’t mind that Arteta keeps tabs on players that could hurt him or tackle aggressively, but he really needs to keep his cool. Everton can’t afford to lose him, especially with the impact he has had while playing. David Moyes has talked to him, and I doubt that Arteta will react like that again. He is usually level headed and that reaction seemed to be an anomaly.

Liverpool’s win over West Ham puts them five points ahead of us and really gives us no room for error. There are only three matches left in the season and we may need some outside help for Europe to be possible at this point.

Cahill, Yakubu propel Everton

Everton 3 - 2 Blackburn

Cahill’s 90th minute strike keeps Everton in the hunt for Europe. Everton dominated possession all match, but Tim Howard and the defense struggled immensely on set pieces. The scoring started early, with a converted penalty in the 4th minute, after Mikel Arteta was clearly fouled in the box by Ryan Nelson. From there on Everton dominated most of the half, but never created any good opportunities to go up two. In the 20th minute, Arteta lucked out by only picking up a yellow card after poking Morten Pedersen in the eye. Blackburn slowly started picking up their attack after this incident. Most of their chances were created during set pieces, where Everton’s fullbacks and Tim Howard looked lost. Everton were lucky to go into the half unscathed.

The second half began with some more pressure by Blackburn, and they finally equalized with a phenomenal strike by Steven Nzonzi. The Toffees attack started to seem feeble, and Moyes made two changes, the second one being Yakubu for Tony Hibbert. This move proved to be the difference. Within 20 seconds of coming in, Yakubu found the back of the net. This was done after a long throw by Baines was headed toward Yakubu by Victor Anichebe. Yakubu headed the ball in with a defender falling into him. Two minutes later, on a counter-attack by Blackburn, Jason Roberts powered a strong shot following a through ball to equalize again. This match started to look tantalizingly similar to the last two matches played by Everton. Cahill had something to say about a draw though. Cahill, on a recent scoring tear, tapped in a short cross after Yakubu made some astonishing moves on the left side of the box to bring out the goalie. This 90th minute goal kept the dream of Europe alive and puts the Toffees within striking distance of Aston Villa and Liverpool.

The addition of Arteta and Yakubu made an immense difference in the play of Everton. Arteta held possession for Everton (63% for Everton compared to 37% for Blackburn) and changed the dynamic of the game for Everton. Yakubu created goal chances, something Everton lacked in the first half. Cahill also continued his goal scoring streak by putting another one in the net after scoring two against Villa. This victory was essential in Everton’s hopes to get to Europe and shows how important Arteta is to the team. As long as our team stay healthy, we should have quite a good chance to finish at least in the top 7 and hopefully make it to the Europa League (given Portsmouth is still denied).

Next week Everton plays Fulham at Goodison Park. If Everton wants any chance of making it to Europe, a victory would be very wise.

Tim Howard Taking Responsibility

If you have ever watched an Everton match, you know how fiery Tim Howard is. Any time an opposing team is even near the box and he makes a save (or even a shanked shot for that matter), Howard starts shouting like a madman to his teammates. If you haven't had the opportunity to see this scene, just picture Didier Drogba after he loses a match, or Wayne Rooney when his feet touch anything that resembles a pitch, or Bobby Knight after any referee's call against him, or Hal McRae after a stupid ass question, or Mike Gundy after he reads a newspaper, or Dennis Green after thinking someone was who he thought they were, or Jim Mora any day of his life. If you don't know at least one of these references and you call yourself a sports fan, then god have mercy on your soul. Here's the best montage I could find with a lot of these angry people clips - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF7aCF8WFbA
It always seems like Howard is berating his teammates for not trying hard enough or making too many mistakes. Even when Howard himself makes mistakes, it seems that he is shouting at the top of his lungs at someone else. I always thought he did this because he didn't take responsibility for goals against him.
Today I realized, he did this in order to provide leadership, and because he's just a plain crazy dude on the pitch.

"I feel disappointed for everyone," Howard said in reference to the Aston Villa match. "I feel from my standards I need to keep those balls out. I got tied up on the bounce and it's just taken a nick off our player. I'm disappointed but you have to hold your hands up."

He took responsibility for the own goal by Phil Jagielka! I've watched the goal a couple of times, and I know Howard couldn't have kept that ball out. It was just an unlucky deflection by Jagielka. But we now know that Howard doesnt hide behind anything for any ball that finds the net. The reason why he's barking orders at someone or other is because he is just plain crazy.

Either that or he really is an ass and just puts on a front to make it seem like he's nice in the media. I like to think he is crazy.

More Late Defensive Woes for Everton

Aston Villa 2 - 2 Everton

Everton continued its disappointing three game stretch of draws, the last two of which it blew leads late. This time, it was against an Aston Villa side that equalized in injury time by an own goal from Phil Jagielka. After beating Manchester City 2-0 away on March 24th, Everton seemed within striking distance of the top 7 and a Europa League berth (given that Portsmouth is refused a berth). The Toffees are currently in 8th in the Premier League, 4 points behind Aston Villa and 5 points behind Liverpool (Villa have a game in hand). While the Aston Villa-Everton match started off with equal opportunities for both sides, Tim Howard had to be called to action with a couple of quick reflex saves. Tim Cahill scored his 8th goal of the season in the 23rd minute with, what else, a header following a corner. Agbonlahor equalized for Villa in the 72nd minute just to be outdone by Tim Cahill two minutes later with another free header following a corner. Everton lost the lead again in injury time with a Jagielka own goal. Ashley Young crossed into the box from left-center and Jagielka, trying to head the ball out, deflected the ball into his own net.

This was another disappointing result for the Toffees. Though I can’t be too disappointed in coming away with a point from Villa Park, I feel we deserved more. It seems we have reverted back to the ways of mental and defensive mistakes that had struck earlier in the season. The main problem seemed to be tiredness and a lack of possession towards the end of the game. While I won’t completely pin the blame on Jagielka for heading the ball into our net, I will blame the lack of pressure given by our midfielders and forwards to players crossing in balls towards the end of the game. This occurred during both goals but was more important in the second, due to the fact that Young got free vision to place his cross right in front of goal. The first goal was a good play by Agbonlahor, but I couldn’t help realize that our defenders were all out of place during his header. I remember these same problems during the beginning of the season where The Toffees would play excellent soccer for 75 minutes and collapse for 15 minutes in the middle of the second half and give up a flurry of goals. The main reason behind these collapses earlier in the season was a chemistry problem between the defenders because of all the injuries we had. The last couple of drawn games seem to stem more from a void in midfield, particularly the loss of Arteta and Fellaini. While Pienaar, Osman, and Cahill are all playing great, they all are attacking midfielders who create offensively in order to score. Heitinga was playing well in the defensive midfielders role until his injury. Rodwell played great, but he did not do what we seriously needed. He couldn’t keep possession on Everton’s side and slow down the game after going ahead. Instead we lost possession after forcing attack. Arteta would take his time to find the right opportunity to attack and until then would keep possession. This is what we are lacking late in games and we might have even held on to a victory if not for the Heitinga injury. Someone really needed to step up to be the pivot in the midfield. None of the midfielders took on this responsibility and Everton ended up with only a point. Arteta should be coming back from injury soon, but until then Moyes needs to find a player that is willing to control a game like Arteta has done in the past. If that doesn’t happen soon, Europa League qualification will slowly slip from our grasps.
